Let’s Talk Corruption and Loyalty…

Over the past 48 hours, the news cycle has thrown a few headlines at us that deserve some attention.

Yesterday afternoon, Attorney General (and former personal lawyer to President Trump) Todd Blanche told a congressional committee that the Department of Justice will not be moving forward with plans to create a $1.776 billion fund for alleged victims of political weaponization. But don’t be fooled, there is an equally troubling piece of this puzzle that remains intact.

Blanche has indicated his intent to allow the controversial grant of amnesty to President Trump and his family members to stand, shielding them from IRS audits, both past and future.

This is astonishing. One of—if not the—most basic premises of our legal system is that the law applies equally to everyone. Yet, in this instance, President Trump has once again secured special treatment for himself and his family.

This is exactly why so many Americans have lost faith in government. Time and again, the people in power receive special treatment that ordinary citizens do not. That’s not accountability. That’s not equal justice under the law. That’s cronyism. And it has flooded the highest levels of our government.

On a related theme, expertise apparently no longer matters in government. Loyalty reigns supreme.

With the departure of Tulsi Gabbard from her role as Director of National Intelligence, Donald Trump had a vacancy to fill. At a moment when the United States is navigating war with Iran, continuing to aid Ukraine in its years-long war against Russia, and creating new diplomatic challenges almost daily with its “shoot from the hip, diplomacy be damned” style of foreign policy, you might think this would be a moment to appoint someone with extensive intelligence, military, or national security experience. You would be wrong. Unfortunately, qualifications and expertise do not seem to matter to this president. Loyalty does.

Which is why, at this moment of global uncertainty, Donald Trump has chosen Bill Pulte to serve as Acting Director of National Intelligence.

Pulte currently serves as Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency. His background is in housing finance, business, and philanthropy—not intelligence gathering, national security, military affairs, or foreign policy. In fact, there is virtually nothing in his professional background that would suggest he is qualified to oversee America’s intelligence community or serve as the president’s chief intelligence adviser. Yet here we are. Once again, Donald Trump has elevated loyalty over competence.

We now have a cabinet and senior leadership team full of individuals who may look the part on reality television, but unfortunately for the rest of us, many of them have no idea what the hell they’re actually doing.
